- Emphasise the signifier (sign) over the signified (meaning)
- Blur the boundaries of genre (hybrid?)
- Confuse the sense of time and space - hyperreality
- Threaten notion of the fully formed/ whole character
- Resist the viewer's attempts to impose one interpretation of text
- Seem inconclusive/ open ended
